DITA in Two Days

This training course allows technical writers without any previous experience with DITA to effectively implement DITA concepts in practice. By the end of the course, attendees will be able to author and publish DITA, implement various single-sourcing techniques, and understand how DITA specialization and output customization works.

This is an online instructor-led course. We can provide it as a private one-on-one course, a public course, or as a course just for your organization.

The course duration is 16 hours.

 

Session I. Introducing DITA

  1. Why you might need DITA: understanding business challenges of traditional approaches to creating technical documentation.
  2. How DITA can help you solve your content needs and meet challenges.
  3. Understanding DITA essentials: topic-oriented approach, information typing, separation of content from presentation, specialization.
  4. Understanding DITA tools.

 

Session II. Authoring in DITA

  1. Understanding the user interface of the DITA editor.
  2. Creating DITA topics and learning Concept, Task, and Reference elements.
  3. Arranging topics into DITA maps.
  4. Publishing to output formats (PDF, HTML, CHM, etc.).

 

Session III. Understanding DITA Open Toolkit (DITA OT)

  1. How DITA OT works.
  2. Understanding DITA OT’s configuration files.
  3. Running a publication from the command line.

 

Session IV. DITA and Content Reuse

  1. Reusing topics.
  2. Reusing maps.
  3. Reusing a portion of content from a topic in another topic.

 

Session V. DITA and Single Source

  1. Understanding single sourcing.
  2. Profiling and filtering content.
  3. Profiling content using subjectScheme maps.

 

Session VI. DITA and Cross-References

  1. What is different with linking in DITA.
  2. Understanding linking methods.
  3. Using inline cross-references.
  4. Using “Related Links”.
  5. Generating cross-references using relationship tables.

 

Session VII. DITA and Variables

  1. Understanding variables.
  2. Adding variables using key references.
  3. Profiling variables.

 

 Session VIII. Specializing DITA

  1. DITA specialization overview.
  2. When to specialize.
  3. Specialization rules.
  4. Types of specialization: structural, domain, attributes.

 

Session IX. Customizing PDF

  1. Understanding how PDF output is generated.
  2. Understanding PDF output customization.

 

Session X. Customizing HTML-Based Outputs

  1. Understanding how HTML and CHM outputs are generated.
  2. Understanding HTML-based customization.

 

Session XI. Implementing DITA

  1. What DITA implementation includes.
  2. Estimating the Return-On-Investment.
  3. Launching a pilot project.
